Enchanted by her dance, he began writing his plays in rhythm with the graceful movements of her footsteps. Their love remained a secret. As time passed, BhanuSudha became pregnant. Around the same time, her relatives arrived from her native place to take her away from Veeramanyavalanjan. The thought that BhanuSudha might leave him tormented him deeply. He feared the pain of losing her and the humiliation he might face among his friends if she were taken away. On the other hand, he was terrified of the consequences if their relationship and BhanuSudha’s pregnancy became known — the reaction of their families, the society around them, and the royal court. All these thoughts deeply troubled Veeramanyavalanjan. Yet his love for BhanuSudha was so profound that he could not bring himself to abandon her. Overwhelmed by fear and confusion, Veeramanyavalanjan took BhanuSudha’s life. Her unborn child was lost with her. He wished to die alongside her. But before he could do so, he was caught and imprisoned. Deeply remorseful for what he had done, Veeramanyavalanjan chose to remain in prison for the rest of his life. The sound of BhanuSudha’s anklets, her memories, and the pain of what he had done haunted him throughout his life. BhanuSudha — a symbol of grace, love, sacrifice, and tragedy — never found a voice in history. Today, we honor her name. Through the Bhanusudha Natya Puraskaram, her memory lives again — a reminder that art can outlive time, pain, and even death.
